37th Annual Unicoi County Apple Festival

October 3 & 4, 2014
Friday & Saturday: 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

The Unicoi County Apple Festival, drawing more than 110,000 annual attendees, has been consistently named one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 events in the southeast and is a three-year winner of the Northeast Tennessee Tourism Association’s Pinnacle Award. This year’s festival includes over 350 arts and crafts vendors from around the country featuring painting, photography, wood-turning, sculpture, metal crafts, jewelry, blown glass and much more.  In addition, three food courts are located throughout the festival grounds so attendees may enjoy festival foods, beverages and specialty cuisine.

Three entertainment stages featuring live music perfectly complement the arts and crafts atmosphere.  A large children’s area complete with rides and activities is included in the festival for both the young and young-at heart.  A wide array of tournaments are featured including the NFS 4-Mile Race, Farm Bureau Tennis Tournament, Clinchfield Senior Adult Center Cornhole Tournament, Erwin Record Photography Contest, Chamber of Commerce Cooking Contest and Apple Dumpling Contest.

CenturyLink to provide free wireless Internet

CenturyLink is providing free wireless High-Speed Internet in downtown Erwin for the 37th Annual Unicoi County Apple Festival, in partnership with the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce.  Festival patrons and volunteers can access the Internet using their personal devices during the festival.

To make things easy and safe for vendors to complete credit card transactions on the spot, CenturyLink will also set up password protected access just for vendors.


 

Festival Activities Include:

  • Arts & Crafts

    It’s a shoppers delight! Nearly 350 vendors from around the country will line downtown Erwin in “American Craft Country”. With everything from handmade jewelry and woodturning to paintings and pottery, the arts and crafts at the Unicoi County Apple Festival are a must see!

  • Entertainment

    Three entertainment will showcased throughout the festival grounds:

    Gospel Stage: Friday and Saturday, the Phil Bachman Toyotaand Governor’s Bend Retirement and Assisted Living Gospel Stage will feature top gospel singers from around the nation to praise the Lord in song.

    Commons Area Stage: This pro-stage, sponsored in part byAmbrosoundCenturyLinkNorfolk Southern Corporation, andNuclear Fuel Services will feature two-days of the regions best bluegrass, country, rock and accoustic music.

    Gathering Place Stage: This stage, sponsored in part by Waste-Management, will include dance, individual performance and contest announcements.

  • Food, Food, Food

    No need to pack your lunch! Everything from traditional, Chinese, Greek, Stir-Fry to specialty items such as apple butter, fried pies, jams, jellies and other apple treats are available. Bring your appetite and let it have a festival!

  • Children’s Area

    The large children’s area is a festival within a festival, uniquely designed for the young festivalgoers, complete with rides, games, concessions and much more. Sponsored by the Unicoi County Family YMCA, the 2013 festival children’s area will feature exciting attractions including The Fun Factory, Adrenalin Rush, Laser Tag, Bungee Run, Joust, Saber-Tooth Tiger Slide, Bungee Trampoline and Madagascar. Children and adults of all ages are invited to participate. The train ride, a children’s favorite from years past, will also be part of this year’s events.

  • Foot Races

    It’s a race to the finish line….join in Erwin’s world-famous 4 mile run and 2 mile race walk. Contact the Unicoi County Family YMCA at (423) 743-3361 for an application for the 4 mile run or 2 mile race walk.

  • Apple Cooking Contest

    Bring your favorite dish on Friday, Oct. 4 for the 2013 Unicoi County Apple Festival Cooking Contest. This year’s contest will be held at the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce office in downtown Erwin. Entries will be received between 9 and 10 a.m., with the closed judging to begin at 10 a.m. Categories for the apple contest include apple cakes, apple pies and any other apple dish. Only one entry per person per category will be accepted. The entries for the contest must include at least one cup of apples, applesauce or dried apples. A copy of the recipe must be included with the entry to qualify for judging. Prizes in each of the three categories will be $50 for first place, $30 for second place and $20 for third place. All winners will receive an official Unicoi County Apple Festival rosette. Sponsors for the 2013 Apple Cooking Contest include the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce and the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service.     To challenge the cooking talents of youth between the ages 12-17, a youth cooking contest will also be featured. Contest rules require that you must bake the dessert yourself and the recipe must include at least one cup of apples, applesauce or dried apples. A copy of the recipe must be included with the entry to qualify for judging. Only one entry per person will be accepted. The contest will be held at the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce office in downtown Erwin. Entries must be received between 9 and 10 a.m., with the closed judging to begin at 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for 1st through 3rd place, with 1st place receiving $ 50, 2nd place $30 and 3rd place $20.

  • Apple Dumpling Contest

    The Apple Dumpling Contest is a fundraising event in which children ages five years old and under vie for the title of Apple Dumpling of the Year. Click here to download the Apple Dumpling Rules & Application.

  • Photography Contest

    Show off your photographic style during the 7th annual Apple Festival Photography Contest sponsored by The Erwin Record and the Unicoi County Chamber of Commerce. The contest is open to amateur photographers ages 13 and over. Both color and black and white photographs are welcome. The contest will include six categories – inanimate objects, people, animals, plants/flowers, landscapes and water scenes. Contestants many only enter one black and white and one color photo per category. All entries must be print size 8″ x 10″ and matted on a white 11″ x 14″ matte. No frames, glass or color mattes will be judged. Contestants should print their name, address, phone number and category on the back of the matte. Ribbons will be awarded for 1st through 3rd place in both categories and age divisions. A best in show award will be chosen from the first place winners. Entries must be submitted to the Chamber by Friday, September 27. The contest is limited to amateur photographers only.

  • Pottery Show & Sale

    Come and shop beautiful Blue Ridge Pottery from dealers throughout America. As the largest show and sale of Blue Ridge Pottery in the United States, this is definitely a must see for all visitors and collectors alike. Join us for the 33rd annual Blue Ridge Pottery Show at the Unicoi County Intermediate School Gymnasium. Doors are open from 6 – 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 3 for a Preview Sale.   •  Cornhole Tournament

  • The 4th annual Unicoi County Apple Festival Cornhole Tournament, co-sponsored by the Clinchfield Senior Adult Center and Clinchfield FederalCredit Union.  The Tournament will be held on Saturday, October 5 on the grass field behind the Senior Center at 220 Union Street and across the street from Erwin Utilities. The tournament will be directed by TN Blackjack Cornhole, certified CPA Director.  Check-in will begin at 9:00 a.m. with double-elimination tournament play starting at 10:00.  The tournament will be best 2 out of 3 games with single game in loser’s bracket.  Teams will play for a top prize of $200.00 and plaques.  The second and third place teams will receive $100.00, $50.00 and ribbons, respectively.  Entry fee is $25.00 per two-person team.  For addional information and registration forms email cscerwin75@yahoo.com or call the senior center at 423-743-5111.

Gospel Stage

Both Friday and Saturday, on the Phil Bachman Toyota & Governor’s Bend Retirement and Assisted Living Stage, top gospel singers from around the nation will praise the Lord in song. The gospel stage is adjacent to one of the festival food courts and contains seating.

The 2013 Unicoi County Apple Festival is proud announce the addition of this new stage to the Commons Area. This professional touring stage, sponsored by Ambrosound, CenturyLink, Johnson City Federal Credit Union, Norfolk Southern and Nuclear Fuel Services, will feature a variety of music genres including country, rock, bluegrass and acoustic.
