Healthcare in Unicoi County is often characterized by its commitment to provide the best facilities, technologies and care to the people of the community. Unicoi County offers a quality, accredited hospital, several senior health care facilities, established physicians and a myriad of healthcare services for the residents of the community.
Unicoi County Memorial Hospital, Inc. has provided high quality medical care since 1953. The hospital is licensed for 48 acute-care beds, 46 nursing home beds, a two-bed intensive care unit, and operating room suite with an ambulatory surgery waiting area, as well as 24-hour emergency room physician coverage and complete physical therapy, x-ray and laboratory services. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and is a member of Tennessee Hospital Association, American Hospital Association, Tennessee Health Care Association and American Health Care Association. The hospital participates in Medicaid/TennCare, and Medicare.
Since 2002, Associated Therapy Services (ATS) has been providing comprehensive physical therapy services for the local hospital and surrounding community. Their scope of practice includes inpatient, long term care, home health and outpatient therapy consisting of pediatrics, orthopedic, geriatrics, neurological, pain management, TMJ, sports medicine and industrial rehabilitation. Associated Therapy Services is the official sports medicine and physical therapy provider for the Unicoi County Blue Devils and Lady Devils. ATS also serves the Unicoi County School System with physical, occupational and speech therapies.
Erwin Health Care Center is a 125-bed long-term care facility located at 100 Stalling Lane in Erwin. At Erwin Health Care Center, a highly trained staff employs a goal-oriented approach that addresses patients’ physical, emotional, behavioral, social, recreational, spiritual and nutritional needs. Interdisciplinary activities and therapeutic programs enable patients to live their lives as fully as possible given present physical abilities. Erwin Health Care Center has opened a state-of-the-art behavioral health unit to serve the residents of East Tennessee. The 50-bed unit provides comprehensive treatment for older adults who suffer from conditions such as dementia, psychiatric disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, schizophrenia and depression. Specialists trained in geriatric psychiatric care, including a psychiatrist, a psychologist and a nurse practitioner, staff the behavioral health unit. Since 1986, the center has been home to the Caldwell Alzheimer Disease Unit, the state’s first specialized unit dedicated to the care of people with Alzheimer’s disease.
“Dedicated to the Joys of Life,” the Center on Aging & Health offers a uniquely designed Special Care Unit for the treatment of residents with Alzheimer’s and related diseases, a program of Intergenerational and Pet Therapy wherein daily volunteers bring new life to residents and staff alike, and a full-time Rehabilitation Department consisting of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy that often utilizes the county's beautiful walking trails. Their skilled rehabilitation and nursing staff are professionally trained in areas such as wound care, fractures and other injuries, PEG tubes, IV administration, terminal care, rehabilitation from strokes and other illnesses, nutritional needs and long-term care. In addition, they offer temporary respite care when the primary caregiver needs time off, and a full-time adult day care program with options for evenings and weekends.
For a personal touch to one’s health care needs, Unicoi County hosts many individual clinics, family medical centers, specialists, surgeons and private-practice physicians skilled in a range of specialties. In addition, Unicoi County offers several national, local and family-operated health and medicine pharmacies that offer a wide range of generic and brand-name products with the personal service only a close-knit community can provide.
